The Best Time to Visit Eleuthera & Harbour Island

Eleuthera is good year-round, but "good" looks different in February than it does in August. As a captain, what I care about most is the wind — it decides whether the water is glassy and clear or choppy and stirred up. Here's the honest month-by-month picture, so you can pick the window that matches the trip you want.

The short answer

For the best all-round mix of calm water, warm temperatures and reliable boat days, aim for late April through June or September through early November. You get warm seas, lighter winds and fewer crowds than the winter peak — the shoulder-season sweet spots.

Eleuthera weather, season by season

Winter — December to March (peak season)

The classic Bahamas escape: warm, sunny days in the upper 70s°F and low humidity. The catch is wind. Winter cold fronts sweep through every week or two and kick up the seas for a day or three, which can stir up visibility and bump boat trips. It's also the busiest and priciest stretch, especially around the holidays and over Harbour Island's social season.

Spring — April to June (shoulder — sweet spot)

Winds settle, water warms into the low 80s°F, and the crowds thin after Easter. Mornings are often glassy. This is prime time for swimming with the pigs, sandbar days, snorkeling and spearfishing alike. Prices ease off the winter peak.

Summer — July to September (warm & quiet)

The water is at its warmest (mid-80s°F) and calmest on settled days, and the islands are at their quietest. It's hot and humid with short afternoon showers, and you'll want to watch the tropics (see hurricane season below). Early-morning trips beat the heat and the breeze.

Autumn — October to November (shoulder — underrated)

Once peak hurricane risk eases in late October, autumn is one of the most underrated windows: warm water still, low crowds, and good prices. November mornings can be spectacular.

Water temperature & conditions

  • Warmest water: July–September (mid-80s°F) — barely need a rash guard.
  • Coolest water: January–March (low-to-mid 70s°F) — a shorty wetsuit is nice for long spearfishing sessions.
  • Calmest mornings: Late spring and autumn, before the afternoon sea breeze fills in.
  • Best visibility: Settled, low-wind stretches in any season — wind, not rain, is what clouds the water here.

Hurricane season — what to actually know

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with the highest activity from mid-August to mid-October. That doesn't mean you can't visit — most summer days are perfectly calm and sunny. It does mean two things: watch the forecast in that window, and travel with insurance and a flexible booking. We offer free cancellation up to two days before your trip date for exactly this reason.

Best time for each kind of trip

  • Swimming with the pigs & sandbars: Spring and autumn mornings — calm and warm. See how to swim with the pigs.
  • Spearfishing: Late spring through autumn for warm water and visibility; details in our spearfishing guide.
  • Harbour Island & Pink Sands: Year-round, but spring and autumn dodge both the winter crowds and the summer heat — see the Harbour Island day-trip guide.
  • Lobster: Bahamas crawfish season runs August 1 to March 31.
